Almost everyone recommends that diabetics take magnesium because you apparently tend to pee it out for some reason. I do not take any extra because I get quite a bit with my regular vitamins and I am on a
lot of dark chocolate every day as you know and it contains very high magnesium.
Why do you need these things if you are eating right? Well it is almost
imposable to find food that contains what our ancestors ate, Tremendous difference in food value of produce for example they tested in the 50's and today. Think of the difference to 1900 food content compared to
today's.
Basically I am interested in what works.
Here is some of the things I take, Chromium Picolinate, be sure it has both words. 500 mg or less twice a day or if trying to lose weight I would go to 1,000 since it is a great aid in losing weight as well as helping getting glucose into cells.
Alpha Lopic Acid, not sure right amount but I am taking300 mg twice a day.
Then there is one that acts almost like insulin in getting glucose to go into cells and
the Albion Chlated Vanadium, can hardly read it but looks like 5 mg twice a day. Mentioned earlier Glucosomine for joint problems and think it will help lower inflammation somewhere if you have some going. I take Cod liver oil, about a table spoon every day despite I live in
AZ and go out and get lots of vitamin D every day.
The University here did a study some years ago on taking a teaspoon of psylluim seed husks 3 times a day before meals as a
remarkable way to lower you blood sugar.
Actually it is a very high fiber, (keeps you regular) and slows digestion so much your blood sugar takes a long time to be affected. I take a table spoon mixed in a really big glass of water first thing every morning. Suspect the big glass of water might be doing me as much good as the psyllium but no matter it works.
Eating a half grape fruit before meals supposedly lowers blood sugar 20% but it is pretty sweet so I eat mine along with a high fiber breakfast so it all digests very slowly.
I eat steamed vegetable for supper with a lot of grass fed butter. A good electric steamer with timer is about $25 or you can use a steamer pan. The timer is nice because you always do them the exact right time. Overseas we make a steamer available by taking along a big circle thing like a fly screen you put over frying pans to keep them from spattering. it fits on the side of suite case is fly screen thin so takes no room. If they have a frying pan fill the bottom with water, put on the screen on top like you would to keep from splattering, but veggies on top of screen put lid on top of that an steam away... works like a charm.
When listing supplements I usually forget to mention that as you age your natural production of Melatonin drops off.
Drop off starts at age 26 so by 60 you are almost making none. This is the one you can read whole books on the benefits but I took it before I ever had diabetes diagnosed. Would not think of not taking it
It basically helps you fix your sleep patterns and it lasts six hours. I take 3 mg before going to bed and if you wake up in middle of night take another one, though I always forget.
