Your body try's to maintain nearly a neutral
balance between acidic and alkaline.
Your acid or alkaline body balance can be a big factor in your over all health and is listed as between 0 and 14.
7 is neutral below is acidic and just above that at 7.5 is ideal, higher meaning slightly alkaline.
PH factor is used in soil testing to show alkaline or acidic soil. Here we use it to show condition of your body for hosting invaders. An alkaline balance is considered difficult to become sick, a cancer patient will be acidic for example in the 5 range.
Most fresh fruits and vegetables along with some nuts are alkalizing affect.
Meats, processed foods, dairy and flour are in contrast mostly acidic.
Citrus is for example alkalizing in affect when consumed and some recommend using lemon in your water and squeezing on foods to help
alkalize it.
Processed foods are usually acidic, for example fresh tomatoes are alkaline, canned acidic.
Your body try's to maintain the correct balance but if you eat primarily acidic foods, such as flour, meat and processed foods your body may have to draw alkaline influencing factors from your bones. This can leave older people with hollow easily breakable bones.
Therefore your PH factor becomes very important to the older population. You can monitor your ph with test strips from a health food store and there are lists that show which foods are acidic and which alkaline, and chose with balancing in mind.
Though citrus shows acidic, when absorbed as food becomes alkaline. Some suggest lemon in your water to give you an alkaline start.
Recent figures show that
4 out of 10 white women age 50 or older will break a hip, spine or wrist. Often due to hollowed out bones.
Bone health deficiency is known as Osteoporosis. As many as half of older women and a quarter of men will break a bone as a result of it.
You lose as high a 3% a year of bone strength. If you are inactive your risk is much greater. Weight bearing exercises are helpful.
Also to be noted is that in addition to the above one in 5 hip fracture patients for example end up in a nursing home.
This can be a preventable disease however, by keeping your ph level more correct by eating more alkaline, fresh foods, and less processed acidic food. You check your lists that show which foods are which.
One of the main preventatives in bone loss for older people is Vitamin D. The sunshine free vitamin that up to 85% are short of. It is
absolutely essential to bone health and can be from sunshine or supplements.
If you don't get enough calcium and/or vitamin D and your body runs constantly acidic, then your body uses your bones to provide calcium to help
alkalize the rest of the body.
While eating more alkaline food with more calcium is fairly easy to get through food, Vitamin D is a little harder for northern
latitude folks to get a least 30 minutes a day of good sun exposure,
You can get your vitamin D in salmon and Cod liver oils. Vitamin K. is also essential and primarily made by friendly bacteria in your intestine.
For that you need water without the bacteria killing chlorine (let city water sit 24 hours to lose the chlorine) and refresh your friendly gut bacteria regularly with Yogurt or other fermented foods that contain friendly bacteria.
Same green leafy vegetable contain some vitamin K.
Managing your ph factor and your bone health becomes a critical factor for seniors to maintain their
independence.
Falls and broken bones are one of the most serious mortality risks to an over 60 adult.
A fourth of hip fractures victims reported to die within six months, 2/3 within two years, so bone injuries are likely to either kill you prematurely and/or put you in a rest home for the rest of your life.

Be aware of our warning about running an overly acidic body ph, because your body will try to maintain the correct alkaline PH balance and will draw from your bones to get the alkaline needed to do that, thereby over time hollowing out your bones.
Therefore, this testing to learn how to maintain a non overly acidic body balance is
crucial as you age to learn to maintain a close to alkaline as you can. Test strips are inexpensive and not cumbersome.
Your author uses a half small lemon per very large pitcher of water to start the day as alkaline and had not so much as a cold when doing so in five years. The one week off it (out of lemons) had a one day virus, It supposedly is almost impossible for all bacteria and viruses to last long in your body when you are consistently alkaline.

Even if you avoid bone losing prescriptions zapping your bone strength, you will naturally lose bone strength annually as you age.. (note you also lose about the same amount of muscle mass annually.
Therefore if you live to 90 you will have lost most of your bone strength unless you have done weight bearing training and some extra calcium, adequate or extra vitamin D, etc and worked against bone loss..
Best source of calcium supplementation is 8 ounces or more of full fat plain yogurt. Your author has eaten 24 ounces or more of full fat plain cultured yogurt daily for many years. (mostly with dark chocolate added to make a yogurt pudding). You also need the beneficial friendly bacteria yogurt adds to your gut system, and the fat source.
